• Converts printed media into editable text documents using a scanner
• Old media can be digitised so that it can be published in new formats (e.g. e-readers)
• Resulting document must be proofread as OCR isn’t perfect

OMR

• For multiple-choice responses
• Not suitable for any form of written communication
• May not be picked up if only part of the box is marked

MICR

• Used for cheques because of the high cost of the reader
• Ink containing iron oxide and specific fonts

Touch screens

• Two types - resistive and capacitive

Resistive

• Cheaper
• Made up of two thin transparent sheets which record a voltage when touched together
• Image isn’t especially sharp
• Not support for multi-touch

Capacitive

• Sharper image and multi-touch
